Our story
A Home Away From Home was founded in 2007 by Jennifer Button and Anita Barnum. Today we’re a small team carrying that work forward across Greater Los Angeles and the Coachella Valley — with deep local knowledge of the communities families ask about most.
How we work
National directories make money by collecting your contact information and selling it to many communities at once. We work the opposite way. We read what you sent, then narrow the list down to a small number of communities we have personally toured — and only introduce you to them with your go-ahead. That’s the difference.
Our consulting is free to families. We’re compensated by the community a family ultimately chooses — only after a move-in — and that fee is built into the community’s standard pricing. Families pay nothing extra by working with us.
What we know
We’ve placed Southern California families since 2003, with deep ties to MAPS L.A., ACT I, the Alzheimer’s Association, Better Living For Seniors, and Providence Saint John’s Medical Center. We’ve seen the full range — independent living and board & care, the early decisions and the urgent ones — and we know which communities fit which situations.
Why we do this work
Truly helping people is gratifying. Families come to us in the middle of a hard, sometimes urgent decision, and the best part of this job is getting to make that decision a little less overwhelming.
